Q121: Why is the word Remember set in the beginning of the fourth commandment?
A121: The word Remember is set in the beginning of the fourth commandment,[637] partly,
  1. (Exo 20:8) "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

  2. (Exo 16:23) then he said to them, "This is what the LORD meant: Tomorrow is a sabbath observance, a holy sabbath to the LORD. Bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over put aside to be kept until morning."

(Luk 23:54,56) It was the preparation day, and the Sabbath was about to begin. . . Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. And on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.

(Mar 15:42) When evening had already come, because it was the preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath,

(Neh 13:19) It came about that just as it grew dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut and that they should not open them until after the sabbath. Then I stationed some of my servants at the gates so that no load would enter on the sabbath day.

  3. (Psa 92:12-14) The righteous man will flourish like the palm tree, He will grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Planted in the house of the LORD, They will flourish in the courts of our God. They will still yield fruit in old age; They shall be full of sap and very green,

(Eze 20:12,19-20) "Also I gave them My sabbaths to be a sign between Me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD who sanctifies them. . . 'I am the LORD your God; walk in My statutes and keep My ordinances and observe them. 'Sanctify My sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between Me and you, that you may know that I am the LORD your God.'

  4. (Gen 2:2) By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.

(Psa 118:22,24) The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief corner stone. . . This is the day which the LORD has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

(Act 4:10-11) let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead--by this name this man stands here before you in good health. "He is the STONE WHICH WAS REJECTED by you, THE BUILDERS, but WHICH BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone.

(Rev 1:10) I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like the sound of a trumpet,

  5. (Eze 22:26) "Her priests have done violence to My law and have profaned My holy things; they have made no distinction between the holy and the profane, and they have not taught the difference between the unclean and the clean; and they hide their eyes from My sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.

  6. (Neh 9:14) "So You made known to them Your holy sabbath, and laid down for them commandments, statutes and law, through Your servant Moses.

  7. (Exo 34:21) "You shall work six days, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even during plowing time and harvest you shall rest.

  8. (Deu 5:14-15) but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant or your ox or your donkey or any of your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you, so that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. 'You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out of there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to observe the sabbath day.

(Amo 8:5) saying, "When will the new moon be over, so that we may sell grain, and the sabbath, that we may open the wheat market, to make the bushel smaller and the shekel bigger, and to cheat with dishonest scales,

  9. (Lam 1:7) In the days of her affliction and homelessness Jerusalem remembers all her precious things That were from the days of old, When her people fell into the hand of the adversary And no one helped her. The adversaries saw her, They mocked at her ruin.

(Jer 17:21-23) 'Thus says the LORD, "Take heed for yourselves, and do not carry any load on the sabbath day or bring anything in through the gates of Jerusalem. "You shall not bring a load out of your houses on the sabbath day nor do any work, but keep the sabbath day holy, as I commanded your forefathers. "Yet they did not listen or incline their ears, but stiffened their necks in order not to listen or take correction.

(Neh 13:15-22) In those days I saw in Judah some who were treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sacks of grain and loading them on donkeys, as well as wine, grapes, figs and all kinds of loads, and they brought them into Jerusalem on the sabbath day. So I admonished them on the day they sold food. Also men of Tyre were living there who imported fish and all kinds of merchandise, and sold them to the sons of Judah on the sabbath, even in Jerusalem.

Then I reprimanded the nobles of Judah and said to them, "What is this evil thing you are doing, by profaning the sabbath day? "Did not your fathers do the same, so that our God brought on us and on this city all this trouble? Yet you are adding to the wrath on Israel by profaning the sabbath."

It came about that just as it grew dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut and that they should not open them until after the sabbath. Then I stationed some of my servants at the gates so that no load would enter on the sabbath day. Once or twice the traders and merchants of every kind of merchandise spent the night outside Jerusalem. Then I warned them and said to them, "Why do you spend the night in front of the wall? If you do so again, I will use force against you."

From that time on they did not come on the sabbath. And I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves and come as gatekeepers to sanctify the sabbath day. For this also remember me, O my God, and have compassion on me according to the greatness of Your lovingkindness.
