Q72: What is justifying faith?
A72: Justifying faith is a saving grace,[1] wrought in the heart of a sinner by the Spirit [2] and word of God,[3] whereby he, being convinced of his sin and misery, and of the disability in himself and all other creatures to recover him out of his lost condition,[4] not only assenteth to the truth of the promise of the gospel,[5] but receiveth and resteth upon Christ and his righteousness, therein held forth, for pardon of sin,[6] and for the accepting and accounting of his person righteous in the sight of God for salvation.[7]
  1. (Heb 10:39) But we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the preserving of the soul.

  2. (2Co 4:13) But having the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, "I BELIEVED, THEREFORE I SPOKE," we also believe, therefore we also speak,

    (Eph 1:17-19) that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might

  3. (Rom 10:14, 17) How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? . . . So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.

  4. (Act 2:37) Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?"

    (Act 4:12) "And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved."

    (Act 16:30) and after he brought them out, he said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"

    (Joh 16:8-9) "And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;

    (Rom 5:6) For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

    (Eph 2:1) And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,

  5. (Eph 1:13) In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation--having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,

  6. (Joh 1:12) But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,

    (Act 10:43) "Of Him all the prophets bear witness that through His name everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins."

    (Act 16:31) They said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household."

  7. (Php 3:9) and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith,

    (Act 15:11) "But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they also are."
