Q27: What misery did the fall bring upon mankind?
A27: The fall brought upon mankind the loss of communion with God,[1] his displeasure and curse; so as we are by nature children of wrath,[2] bond slaves to Satan,[3] and justly liable to all punishments in this world, and that which is to come.[4]
  1. (Gen 3:8, 10, 24) They heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. . . He said, "I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself." . . . So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life.

  2. (Eph 2:2-3) in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.

  3. (2Ti 2:26) and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will.

  4. (Gen 2:17) but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die."

(Lam 3:39) Why should any living mortal, or any man, Offer complaint in view of his sins?

(Rom 6:23) For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(Mat 25:41, 46, Jude 1,7) "Then He will also say to those on His left, 'Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; . . ."These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." . . . just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, since they in the same way as these indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh, are exhibited as an example in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.
